Cycle paths and other off-road routes can be closed without notice, causing inconvenience to cyclists and pedestrians. Also, when closures take place, diversions are rarely suggested or signposted. The Chester Cycling Campaign is providing a constantly updated list of closures and reopenings to enable you to plan your journey with some confidence.
The list below is based on reports from Campaign members and members of the public. Its accuracy depends on up-to-date reports from Campaign members and members of the public. Please let us know if any of the information below is inaccurate or out of date. Also, you can let us know of new route closures using the ‘Comments’ form at the bottom of this page. We are grateful for any updates that you may be able to supply!
Current Route and Path Closures
Flint Meadow Entrance to Park on NCR 568 – A short section of the route out to Parkgate will be closed for approximately on month from 19 March 2018. The closed section is a traffic-free section that passes through the small parkland area off Flint Meadow near Neston. An alternative route for cyclists travelling from Chester would be to continue straight along Allan’s Meadow to the t-junction at Burton Road. Turn left into Burton Road and then take the next left into Church Lane to rejoin NCR 568.
Canal Towpath – The towpath is closed in the Northgate cut between the locks and Cow Lane Bridge (Frodsham Street). This closure is due to a risk to cyclists and pedestrians from loose masonry on the city walls below King Charles tower at the NE corner of the city walls.
This is closure started in the autumn of 2017 and could conceivably last for a number of years. This is due to the cost and complexity of the necessary repairs, and the lack of finance to carry out the repair. Further information about the closure is available from the Canal and River Trust website:
Route 568 Along the River Dee by the Cop Park – Route 568 along the River Dee into Chester by the Cop by Sealand Road and New Crane Street is closed for cyclists and pedestrians. This is due to a Watkin Jones construction project developing a new block of flats. The path is likely to be closed until approximately the middle of 2018.
Recent Route and Path Reopenings
Parkgate Road to Liverpool Road Ginnel (Prince Rupert’s Trench) – This useful off road shortcut for pedestrians and cyclists has been reopened after a closure of several years. It enables cyclists to avoid the busy Fountains Roundabout when cycling in this part of the city.
Northgate Street Turn to Delamere Street – Right turn for cyclists restored with a new refuge for cyclists. Very busy junction, so take care.
